Recap 07/31: Aeros Falter Late, Lose 8-6 to Reading in 10th

AKRON,
OH – Akron’s perfect streak of late-inning relief ended Saturday night as the
Reading Phillies scored in each of the final three frames en route to an 8-6
victory in 10 innings at Canal Park. The loss was the first by the Aeros in 50
games this season when leading after the eighth and four defensive errors hurt
the cause on the night in front of 3,925 fans in downtown Akron. Despite the
defeat, the Aeros (56-49) remain one game behind the Western Division wild card
spot while the Phillies improved to 52-53.

Center
fielder Jordan Henry began his impressive night with a leadoff single in the bottom
of the first and designated hitter Jason Kipnis followed with an RBI double.
Two batters later, first baseman Beau Mills gave Akron a quick 2-0 lead with a
sacrifice fly to left.

Back-and-forth
scoring ensued as Reading took advantage of solo homers to lead off the second
and third innings against Aeros lefty starter Scott Barnes. Third baseman
Lonnie Chisenhall returned the favor with a towering solo shot of his own that
cleared the right field bleachers in the bottom of that third, maintain a
one-run advantage for the hosts.

In
the fifth, four singles against Barnes tied the score at 3-3 as Michael Spidale
plated Freddy Galvis with a one-out base hit to center. Lo and behold, second
baseman Cristo Arnal and Henry each singled in the bottom half before Kipnis
plated Arnal with another base hit and Henry scored on a misplay at the plate
by catcher Tuffy Gosewisch.

Each
teams scored yet again in the seventh as Rich Thompson scored on a groundout to
cut the deficit to 5-4 before a Henry triple extended the lead again.
Unfortunately, the Aeros offense did not respond to three straight rallies that
sealed the comeback victory.

Doubles
by Kevin Mahar and Gosewisch against Akron reliever Steven Wright brought the
margin down to a single run again in the eighth. Closer Omar Aguilar entered
the game in the ninth, but allowed two walks while a wild pitch scored Thomspon
to force extras.

Aguilar
retired the first two batters of the 10th inning but then Galvis
reached base on a single and advanced to second on an Arnal error. Thompson and
Garcia followed with back-to-back RBI hits to provide for the final margin. Henry
dove to catch Mahar’s fly ball on the center field warning track, stranding the
runners and ending the deciding rally.

Reading
reliever Justin De Fratus (1-0) earned the victory with a pair of shutout frames
as the Phillies bullpen closed the door. Aguilar (2-4) took the loss for Akron
in his first blown save, permitting three runs but just one earned.  Barnes had a quality start despite his
no-decision, allowing three runs on six hits in his six innings pitched with
four strikeouts.

Henry
finished 4-for-5 at the plate to increase his batting average to .588
(10-for-17) during this home stand while Kipnis was 3-for-5 with his double. Before
tonight’s loss, the Aeros led the league with a 49-0 record when leading after
eight innings this season.

Family
Packs return tomorrow as the Aeros and the Phillies conclude this four-game
series Sunday afternoon at 1:20 p.m. Fans can save $28 on special family packs

starter Anthony Reyes (0-0, 0.00 ERA) makes his second rehab start for Akron

AERODYNAMICS… 

· Shutout City… Akron’s hot streak continued Friday night at Canal Park as three Aeros pitchers combined to shutout the Reading Phillies in a 6-0 victory. Lefty starter Kelvin De La Cruz led the way with six shutout innings and the scoring began in the first on a sacrifice fly by third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall. Shortstop Carlos Rivero then lofted a home run in the second inning before extending the lead to 3-0 with a sac fly in the third. An error by Reading third baseman Cody Overbeck scored Chisenhall from second base in the fifth and after a John Drennen double, a wild pitch plated Rivero. First baseman Beau Mills drove in the final run on an RBI infield single to third base in the sixth inning with the bases loaded. De La Cruz (4-5) earned the victory before relievers Chen-Chang Lee and Connor Graham sealed the deal as Phillies starter Ty Taubenheim (3-2) took the loss. 

· Cruising Along… The left-hander De La Cruz recorded his third victory in a row Friday to cement an impressive month of July. Over the course of his five starts this month, he was 3-0 with a 2.49 ERA, striking out 24 batters in only 25.1 innings pitched. The soon-to-be 22-year-old native of La Vega, Dominican Republic had gone 10 consecutive games without a win prior to his outing July 15th against Erie, but has now limited opponents to two runs or less in five straight starts. He missed the majority of the 2009 season with a strained ligament in his throwing elbow and was placed on the Cleveland 40-man roster in November. 
· Riveting Rivero… Many different players have stepped up recently on offense for the Aeros and Rivero was the hero Friday night against the Phillies. He finished 1-for-3 with his fourth homer of the season and a sacrifice fly, driving in two RBI with two runs scored. The Venezuela native is now batting .250 in 14 games since the Eastern League All-Star Break with seven RBI. He returned from the disabled list with a left wrist sprain on July 7th and began the month of July on a 3-for-22 slump at the plate. 
· A-Head of the Curve… Following Friday’s victory, Head earned the promotion to Class AAA Columbus. This will be his second 2010 stint with the Clippers and he exits the Eastern League on one of the hottest streaks of his career. In 36 games played since June 10th, was batting .336 with 13 doubles, nine home runs, 25 runs scored and 22 RBI. The 27-year-old native of Topeka, KS also had a career-high 13-game hitting streak and was signed by the Indians as a non-drafted free agent in August 2005. 
· Changes… In other roster moves, the Aeros received infielder Justin Toole from short-season Class A Mahoning Valley while the Cleveland Indians activated closer Kerry Wood. Toole has played in 19 games this year between the Scrappers, Class A Kinston and Columbus. The Indians then traded Wood and cash to the New York Yankees for a player to be named later or cash. 
AEROS STAT OF THE NIGHT: 
The Akron Aeros are 11-3 since the Eastern League All-Star Break earlier this month, making up seven games on the Western Division-leading Altoona Curve (5-11 since the break).

Recap 07/30: Aeros Blank Phillies, Secure 6-0 Victory

AKRON,
OH – The Aeros continued their recent success at home Friday night with an
all-around performance in a 6-0 victory against the Reading Phillies. A crowd
of 7,277 fans on Fireworks Friday witnessed Akron win at Canal Park for the 12th
time in 13 games, highlighted by six shutout innings from lefty starter Kelvin
De La Cruz. Coupled with a loss by the Altoona Curve Friday, the third-place
Aeros (56-48) are now only 3.5 games away from the Western Division lead and
the Phillies are 51-53 on the season.

Akron’s
scoring began early as leadoff center fielder Jordan Henry singled to
left-center in the bottom of the first. Henry promptly stole second base,
advanced to third on a fly out and scored on another sacrifice fly by third
baseman Lonnie Chisenhall.

The
lead jumped to 2-0 in the second inning on a towering solo home run from
shortstop Carlos Rivero, just to the right of the left field foul pole. Reading
starter Ty Taubenheim allowed another run in the third as Rivero recorded a sac
fly to left to score Jason Kipnis.

As
De La Cruz kept the Phillies offense in check, the blowout continued in the
bottom of the fifth. Chisenhall singled to left and moved to second on a groundout
before scoring on a botched play by third baseman Cody Overbeck. Akron left
fielder John Drennen then doubled down the right field line and a wild pitch plated
Rivero to make it a 5-0 edge.

Reliever
John Ennis replaced Taubenheim in the sixth but suffered the same fate despite
only having a runner on first base with two outs. The right-hander then hit
both Chisenhall and Jerad Head with pitches to load the bases while new relief
pitcher Tyson Brumment allowed an RBI infield single to first baseman Beau
Mills.

That
hit provided for the final margin of the night as relievers Chen-Chang Lee and
Connor Graham combined for three shutout innings on one hit for the Aeros.

De
La Cruz (4-5) earned his third consecutive win, delivering six spotless innings
with seven strikeouts against only three hits and three walks. The left-hander,
who turns 22 years old Sunday, improved to 3-0 with a 2.45 ERA in five starts
in July and his recent winning streak follows a 10-game stretch with no
victories. Taubenheim (3-2) took the loss in permitting the first five runs
(three earned) in five innings on six hits and three walks.

Eight
of the nine Akron batters recorded a single hit but Rivero led the way with a
pair of runs scored and two RBI. His home run was his fourth of the season, second
against Reading, and the pitching staff’s shutout was their fourth in the month
of July.

Tomorrow
is a Super Saver Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at Canal Park as this four-game series
continues between the Aeros and the R-Phils. Fans can purchase tickets for only

? Thursday Triumph… The Aeros won 6-5 in dramatic fashion Thursday night against the Reading Phillies, utilizing a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth from catcher Miguel Perez. The back-and-forth game began with an RBI triple from third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall in the first before the Phillies responded with four unearned runs. A Jason Kipnis two-run triple and a Chisenhall groundout tied the game in the third and Reading took the lead at 5-4 in the seventh. Chisenhall then picked up his third RBI of the night on a game-tying sacrifice fly in the eighth inning. First baseman Beau Mills doubled to lead off the ninth, moved to third on a groundout and after an intentional walk, Perez ended the game with his fly ball to left field. Closer Omar Aguilar (2-3) earned the win for the Aeros with a perfect ninth and Reading’s James Anderson (0-3) took the loss. 

? It’s Tribe Time… Cleveland Indians closer Kerry Wood started for Akron Thursday and retired all three batters he faced in his lone inning pitched. He forced a soft lineout before a pair of groundouts to second base, throwing just eight pitches, all strikes, in the first. The 33-year-old veteran is currently on the MLB 15-day disabled list with a blister on his right index finger. 
? Carolina Cool… Usual starter Alex White made his first career professional relief appearance Thursday night as he replaced Wood in the second inning. The 21-year-old native of Greenville, NC struck out a career-high eight in 5.1 innings pitched, allowing five runs (one earned) on seven hits with two walks. Over his past seven outings since June 25th, Cleveland’s first-round (15th overall) pick in the June 2009 Draft is now 4-1 with a 1.03 ERA and 37 strikeouts against only five walks in 43.2 innings. 
? Hot Corner, Hot Bat… Akron’s offensive star Thursday was Chisenhall, who finished 3-for-4 with his triple and three RBI. The performance continued an impressive past week for the second-rated prospect in the Indians organization, according to Baseball America. He is now batting .412 (7-for-17) over his modest four-game hitting streak with a home run and seven RBI. 
? Five for Fighting… The Aeros now have the best batting average in the Eastern League thanks to an impressive top half of the lineup. Akron’s first five batters are now batting .368 (75-for-204) with 47 runs scored and 40 RBI in the past 10 games. Center fielder Jordan Henry and recently promoted Matt McBride have led the way along with Mills, Kipnis and Chisenhall. 
? Wild, Wild West… With Thursday’s victory, the third-place Aeros now trail the Western Division-leading Altoona Curve by only 4.5 games. The Bowie Baysox currently lead the wild card race with a one-game lead over Akron, but there remain at least 37 games for all three teams this regular season. The 4.5-game margin is the closest the Aeros have been to first place since April 27th. 
AEROS STAT OF THE NIGHT: 
The Akron Aeros have an 11-1 record in their last 12 home games since July 7th, averaging 6.5 runs scored while the pitching staff has a 2.48 ERA in 109.0 innings pitched.

Recap 07/29: Aeros Rally, Walk Off in 6-5 Win over Reading

AKRON,
OH – The Aeros tied the score in the eighth inning before winning in the ninth,
defeating the visiting Reading Phillies 6-5 in front of a rowdy Canal Park
crowd Thursday night. Catcher Miguel Perez scored first baseman Beau Mills with
the walk-off sacrifice fly to left field, providing the dramatic victory for
Akron’s 3,838 Thirsty Thursday fans. The win improved the third-place Aeros to
55-48 this season, only 4.5 games behind the division-leading Altoona Curve,
while the Phillies fell to 51-52 with the loss.

Cleveland
Indians closer Kerry Wood started the game on his rehab assignment, quickly
retiring all three batters he faced in the top of the first inning. Third
baseman Lonnie Chisenhall then provided a one-out RBI triple in the bottom half
of the inning to plate center fielder Jordan Henry and give Akron an early 1-0
advantage.

The
Phillies responded with four unearned runs against usual Aeros starting pitcher
Alex White in the second. A throwing error by shortstop Carlos Rivero scored
the first run, an RBI bunt single and a two-run triple presented a three-run
deficit for the host team.

Reading’s
lead was short-lived as second baseman Jason Kipnis lined a two-run triple to
right in the fourth inning and Chisenhall followed with a groundout to tie the
score at 4-4.

Flande
and White battled in the ensuing frames while the latter permitted the visiting
team to retake the lead in the seventh. Harold Garcia collected an RBI single
to right but reliever Nick Hagadone escaped a bases loaded jam to prevent any
further damage.

The
comeback then began the in the eighth inning as Perez again started with a
single. Newcomer Lucas Montero drew a walk, Henry laid down a sacrifice bunt
and Kipnis walked before Chisenhall tied the game with a clutch sacrifice fly
to center.

Mills
initiated the final rally in the ninth against reliever James Anderson with a
leadoff double and advanced to third on a Rivero groundout. Anderson
intentionally walked John Drennen to face Perez, who ended the game with his
sac fly before the Akron bench mobbed him near home plate to celebrate the
series-opening victory.

Closer
Omar Aguilar (2-3) earned the victory for the Aeros with a perfect ninth
inning, striking out one batter. Anderson (0-3) took the loss in allowing the
deciding tally while fellow Reading reliever Matt German blew the save in the
eighth. Wood threw only eight pitches in his rehab outing and White followed
with 5.1 innings pitched, permitting five runs (one earned) on seven hits with
a career-high eight strikeouts.

Chisenhall
led the Akron offense as he finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and one of three
combined triples tonight. Mills and Perez each had two hits and Montero was
0-for-2 but drew a pair of walks after earning the promotion from Class A
Kinston earlier in the day.

This
four-game series continues tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. with a Friday Fireworks
spectacular and Kids Cancer Survivors Celebration Night at Canal Park. Lefty
Kelvin De La Cruz (3-5, 5.16 ERA) will start for the surging Aeros against

· Rain, Rain, Go Away… Rain suspended Wednesday night’s game between the Aeros and the Bowie Baysox at Canal Park. A one-hour and 47-minute rain delay began the night before just 15 minutes of playing time and the official suspension announcement arrived at 9:39 p.m. The game stopped with Baysox catcher Steve Lerud at the plate, one out in the top of the second inning and a runner on first base against Akron starter Scott Barnes. The game will continue at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 23rd at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie followed by that evening’s regularly scheduled series opener in seven innings. 

· Clip Show… The Aeros made several roster moves today highlighted by outfielder Matt McBride’s promotion to Class AAA Columbus. McBride was batting .285 for Akron this season, leading the team in games played (94), doubles (25), home runs (17), and RBI (64). The 25-year-old Bethlehem, PA native will make his debut for the Clippers tonight at Huntington Park. 
· Speed Racer… In a corresponding move, the Aeros received outfielder Lucas Montero from the Class A Kinston Indians to bring the roster back to 23 men. Montero had a .264 batting average in 94 games for Kinston this season, stealing 24 bases in only 29 attempts…. The final Akron roster change of the day was the official announcement of RHP Kerry Wood’s rehab assignment. 
· Summer Catch… Second baseman Jason Kipnis has been incredibly productive offensively since his promotion from the K-Tribe last month. In fact, he has now reached base in all 21 games at Canal Park since making his debut for the Aeros on June 12th. 
AEROS STAT OF THE NIGHT: 
Outfielder Lucas Montero will become the 49th different player to appear for the Akron Aeros this season when he starts tonight, surpassing the entire 2009 total of 47.

Baysox and the game will continue next month in Bowie. A one-hour and 47-minute
delay began the evening and after just 15 minutes of the game, the umpires
called for yet another pause in the action. The final announcement arrived at
9:39 p.m. as the second-place Baysox remain 56-48 and Akron sits one game
behind at 54-48.

The Baysox had a
runner on first base with one out and no score in the bottom of the second
inning against Akron starter Scott Barnes. Catcher Steve Lerud faced a 1-0
count in the frame as Bowie starting pitcher Pedro Viola retired all three
batters in the bottom of the first. The continuation will be part of a
doubleheader during the series from Tuesday, August 23rd through
Thursday, August 25th at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie.

Tonight’s statistics
will not be official until the end of the game next month. A seven-inning
contest will follow 30 minutes after the completion of the first game one of
those nights.

? Tighten Up… The Aeros evened their series with the Bowie Baysox Tuesday night, earning a 4-0 victory thanks to a five-hit shutout by four pitchers. All the scoring for the evening occurred in the first inning in front of the 2,889 fans at Canal Park in downtown Akron. Center fielder Jordan Henry began his impressive night with a double, second baseman Jason Kipnis singled and third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall collected an RBI base hit. Red-hot designated hitter Matt McBride followed with a towering three-run home run to the canal in left field, providing all four quick runs against Bowie starter Rick Zagone. The Baysox finished 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position, stranding eight men on base in the loss. Reliever Connor Graham earned the win on the night for the Aeros with a pair of shutout innings, Zagone (1-3) took the loss and Bryan Price recorded his first career save. 

? Lookin’ Good… Cleveland Indians right-hander Anthony Reyes started for Akron Tuesday night and dominated in his first career Eastern League appearance. The 28-year-old permitted just one hit and one walk with one strikeout in his three shutout innings during his third rehab start following June 2009 Tommy John reconstructive right elbow surgery. The Aeros received Reyes earlier in the day yesterday from the Arizona League Indians, where he was 0-1 with a 4.51 ERA in 4.1 innings pitched. Acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals in a July 2008 trade, he owns a 5.12 ERA in 67 games (52 starts) in his MLB career. 
? Thrice is Nice… A trio of Akron relievers followed Reyes Tuesday and helped to keep the Baysox in check. Recently received Rob Bryson avoided damage despite a double and a walk in the fourth inning before Graham and Price combined to close the door in the final five frames. The Aeros bullpen now has a 2.52 ERA over the team’s past 67 games since May 15th, Graham now has a 2.37 ERA in 24 relief appearances this season and Price has not allowed a run over his past 12.2 innings pitched. 
? Oh Henry… Despite the low scoring Tuesday, Akron’s leadoff hitter Henry had a career performance at the plate. He finished 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a run scored after posting just three extra-base hits and no three-hit games in his first 34 Double-A contests. The 22-year-old is now batting .692 (9-for-13) in his past four games, including Sunday’s currently suspended contest at Reading. Cleveland selected Henry in the seventh round of the June 2009 Draft out of the University of Mississippi. 
? Bash Brothers… McBride continued his hot hitting with his team-leading 17th home run Tuesday but is not the only streaking Aero. Right fielder Jerad Head also extended the longest hitting streak of his career to 10 games with a single as the two outfielders have led the Eastern League’s best offense (.272 team average) for the past two months. McBride is batting .364 with 13 home runs in 26 games since June 28th and Head has a .341 batting average with nine homers in 34 games since June 10th. 
AEROS STAT OF THE NIGHT: 
Tuesday’s 4-0 victory at Canal Park was Akron’s eighth shutout of the season, third in the Eastern League, and third in just 14 games (six wins) against the second-place Bowie Baysox.

Akron Aeros Announce Food Bank Drive Night

AKRON,
OH – The Akron Aeros are pleased to unveil their efforts for a Food Bank Drive
Night at Canal Park for their 7:05 p.m. game on Thursday, August 26th.
Fans that donate non-perishable food items will receive $5 tickets for that
evening’s game in downtown Akron, sponsored by The Akron Plan. All donated
proceeds from the contest against the Erie SeaWolves will in return benefit the
Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank.

The
“super six” of most urgently needed non-perishable food items include boxed
cereal, peanut butter, canned tuna, canned vegetables, canned beef stew and
canned soup. The Aeros recommend fans to exchange any one of these items, or
other non-perishables, at the Canal Park box offices in exchange for a $5
ticket to the Thirsty Thursday contest.

The
Akron Plan is a ground of 17 United Methodist Churches that organize to help
sponsor community events. This Food Bank Drive Night follows Tuesday’s
Christmas in July program at Canal Park where the Aeros accepted any five
non-perishable food items for one free ticket. The team also encouraged fans to
exchange gently used winter coats for two tickets, with the coats benefitting
the Salvation Army of Greater Akron.

Thursday,
August 26th marks an exciting start to yet another home stand in
downtown Akron. Along with the Food Bank Drive Night promotion sponsored by the
Akron Plan, the Aeros will be giving away posters to the first 2,000 fans in
attendance courtesy of Busson Digital Printing. It is also another Thirsty
Thursday at Canal Park with $1 12-oz. soft drinks and draft beer until the end
of the seventh inning.

Canal
Park’s box offices will accept these donations anytime from now until the Food
Bank Drive night and are open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. before 7:05 p.m. home
games. The box offices are also open from 5:00 p.m. until the conclusion of
those contests and from 11:30 a.m. until the end of Sunday afternoon home
games. On other days, they are open weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and
from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Saturdays.

Akron looks for a crucial three-game series victory Wednesday
night with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch time at Canal Park. The Aeros are then home
for the remainder of the week, and for three consecutive weekends during the
month of August. Lefty Scott Barnes (5-8, 5.20 ERA) makes his team-leading 20th start of the year tonight for Akron
against Bowie Baysox left-hander Pedro Viola (3-0, 2.45 ERA). Wednesday
